Some of the 300 runners begin their trek across the U.S. 80 bridge over the Mississippi River Saturday morning n the 23rd annual run. Annette Kirklin, the executive director of the Southern Cultural Heritage Center, said more than 600 people participated in the run, the walk and the fun run and about $15,000 was raised for the center.

BABA GHANOUJ

INGREDIENTS

1 large eggplant
1/4 cup tahini, plus more as needed
3 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice, plus more as needed
1 pinch ground cumin
salt, to taste
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
1/4 cup brine-cured black olives, such as kalamata

INSTRUCTIONS

Prepare a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill.

Preheat an oven to 375°F.

Prick the eggplant with a fork in several places

and place on the grill rack 4 to 5 inches from the

fire.

Grill, turning frequently, until the skin blackens

and blisters and the flesh just begins to feel

soft, 10 to 15 minutes.

Transfer the eggplant to a baking sheet and

bake until very soft, 15 to 20 minutes.

Remove from the oven, let cool slightly,

and peel off and discard the skin.

Place the eggplant flesh in a bowl

Using a fork, mash the eggplant to a paste.

Add the 1/4 cup tahini, the garlic, the 1/4 cup

lemon juice and the cumin and mix well.

Season with salt, then taste and add more

tahini and/or lemon juice, if needed.

Transfer the mixture to a serving bowl and

spread with the back of a spoon to form a

shallow well.

Drizzle the olive oil over the top and

sprinkle with the parsley.

Place the olives around the sides.

As mustachioed Richard Murgatroyd strides across the stage at the Parkside Playhouse in Vicksburg, Miss. (pop. 26,407), spectator Carlie Thomas raises a ruckus with other audience members.

Cupping her mouth with her hands, Thomas, 27, yells “BOOO” repeatedly at Murgatroyd, the villainous city slicker. Thomas’ friend, Courtney Owens, 27, takes a deep breath and lets out a loud hiss.Such outbursts are expected—and encouraged—during performances of Gold in the Hills, the longest-running melodrama in the United States. Since 1936, audiences have cheered for innocent farm girl Nell Stanley and homespun hero John Dalton and jeered the conniving Murgatroyd. They’ve sung 1890s songs with the performers between scenes and clapped wildly when good triumphed over evil.

“It’s an art form that you don’t see much anymore,” says director John Hesselberg, 49, about Victorian-era melodramas, which were popular live theater shows from the mid-1800s until the 1920s. The plays feature stereotypical characters, including damsels in distress and deceitful villains, and moralistic messages about social issues, such as the evils of alcohol.

“Melodramas involve music and exaggerated gestures and dialogue,” Hesselberg says.''

During Gold in the Hills, lively piano music accompanies the heroine’s entrance, while menacing minor chords alert the audience when dastardly deeds are afoot. Before microphones, the dramatic music and exaggerated acting helped spectators, especially those seated at the back of the theater, follow the plot toward its satisfying happy ending.

Community treasure
Gold in the Hills, however, is more than family entertainment each March and July in Vicksburg. The melodrama is a community treasure first staged on March 28, 1936, on a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers barge on the Mississippi River. In 1948, the melodrama relocated to the retired steam-powered Sprague towboat moored along the river. When fire destroyed the Sprague in 1974, the production was staged in a local church until the 250-seat Parkside Playhouse was built in 1978.

“The charming thing about Gold in the Hills is that some of the cast members today are children of the original cast members,” says producer Mike Calnan, 62.

Walter Johnston Jr., 63, who plays dancehall owner Big Mike, attended shows on the Sprague as a young boy and cheered for his father, Walter Johnston Sr., who played the hero and other parts from 1936 until 1964.

“It’s a family tradition and a Vicksburg tradition,” says Johnston, who stepped into the hero’s role himself in 1965, and whose children and other family members have acted in the melodrama through the years.

William Mathews, 61, likewise joined the cast as a teenager and for 42 years has relished his role as conniving Murgatroyd.

“The villain has a lot more gutsy part,” Mathews says. “He’s the mover and shaker in the whole play. I do enjoy the part more, though, without the peanuts,” he says, noting that peanut throwing by the audience ended in 2006 to discourage rodents from infesting the theater.

Cheering and jeering endure, though, as Carlie Thomas shouts “NOOO” when the villain steals a hidden stash of cash from the play’s honest farm family.

“I’m having so much fun,” she says to her friend, Owens.

EGGPLANT BRUSCHETTA

INGREDIENTS

1 medium eggplant, peeled and cut
into 1/4-inch slices
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 medium tomatoes, seeded and chopped
2 tablespoons minced fresh basil
1 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
2 tablespoons shredded Parmesan cheese

INSTRUCTIONS

Place eggplant slices in a colander over a plate;

sprinkle with salt and gently toss. Let stand for

30 minutes. Rinse and drain well. Coat both sides

of each slice with nonstick cooking spray. Place

on a broiler pan. Top eggplant with tomatoes,

basil and cheeses. Broil 6 in. from the heat for

5-7 minutes or until eggplant is tender and

cheese is melted.

The New Miss Mississippi!

VICKSBURG, Miss - The 2011 Miss Mississippi Pageant is officially in the history books. The new Miss Mississippi has been crowned and her name is Mary Margaret Roark.

Roark, a veteran of the Miss Mississippi's Outstanding Teen Pageant and second-year contestant in the Miss Mississippi Pageant, is currently attending Mississippi State University and is majoring in communications and would like to pursue a career in the broadcast industry. She is a native of Cleveland, Mississippi and graduated from Bayou Academy in 2009.

The daughter of Fred and Mary Jo Roark, Mary Margaret developed her own platform to promote thanks to a very personal experience that she had watching her grandmother progress through Alzheimer's. Due to that experience, she is a proud advocate for the Mississippi Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association and has created her own campaign to promote Alzheimer's awareness throughout the state called JEWELS for Alzheimer's.

JEWELS is an acronym which stands for:

Join the cause to

Educate the public and

Work for a cure while

Encouraging those who

Live with the disease and

Supporting those who care for them.

Mary Margaret says, "JEWELS For Alzheimer's summarizes everything that I hope for with Alzheimer's Disease. With my campaign, I have promoted awareness among communities in the state to recruit more activists and to raise more funds for research and care centers. I have also started a jewelry collection for JEWELS For Alzheimer's with the help of jewelry designer, Alex Bowen. A portion of all sales from the jewelry is donated to local Alzheimer's Association chapters to help with their expenses. My experience with Alzheimer's began with my grandmother, but with the help of others, my mission is growing and will continue to grow until we find a cure."

Pageant Week Festivities Begin!!!
Two Autograph Parties Scheduled

MONDAY, JUNE 27, 2011 - The Miss Mississippi Pageant will be held this week in Vicksburg, beginning on Wednesday night and continuing through Saturday evening. The week of festivities will end when Sarah Beth James passes her crown on to the 54th young woman to be crowned in Vicksburg.

Those festivities begin tonight (Monday) at 7 pm when the contestants participate in the Miss Mississippi Pageant Parade. The parade has become an annual event in the Red Carpet City of the South. The parade will pass along the traditional parade route which includes the historic brick-paved Washington Street in downtown Vicksburg.

The contestants have been split into three groups (A, B & C) and will compete with their group throughout the preliminary process. Now, technically, the pageant has already begun. The judges began the process of interviewing the contestants from Group A today. They will also conduct the interviews, which are not open to the public, on Tuesday (Group B) and conclude with Group C on Wednesday.

Contestants will continue rehearsals on Tuesday and ready themselves for the first night of preliminary competition on Wednesday.

The festivities on Wednesday will kick off with an autograph party with the contestants from "Group B." The autograph party will be held at the showroom of longtime pageant sponsor George Carr Buick Cadillac GMC on South Frontage Road.

Wednesday Night's preliminary competition will commence at 8 p.m. at the Vicksburg Convention Center. Tickets are available at the Convention Center box office or from the Miss Mississippi Corporation office. Call 601-638-6746 for more information.

A second autograph party, featuring contestants from Groups A & C, will be held from 9:30 - 11:15 am on Thursday at The Outlets at Vicksburg. The public is once again invited to attend and meet the contestants, get photos and autographs and give them words of encouragement.

The contestants will absolutely be thrilled to see your faces, so get out and show them some support and give them a huge River City Welcome!

Upon completing the seminar, your name will be added to the Judges list.

Welcome to RiverFest and Vicksburg, Mississippi, the Red Carpet City of the South: blocks and blocks of river artisans, foods of the world, and lively regional music.

Shop our wonderful shops, enjoy our newly renovated downtown, and take in the great sites and sounds that make Vicksburg a national attraction.

But save something for sundown, when the bluffs start to jump and the revelers begin to pound the bricks!

The 24th annual RiverFest will be held April 15-16, 2011 featuring the Arts and Crafts Show as well as live entertainment from 7pm to 12am nightly. Gates for nightly events will open at 6pm.

The RiverFest Arts & Crafts Show is an annual event, offering handmade Arts & Crafts, Food Booths, and Entertainment, including street performers, live bands, kids games, GospelFest and much, much more! The show is open from 8am - 4pm on Saturday. Attendance for Saturday Daytime Activities is free and parking is free for the whole weekend!

Ingredients

3 tablespoons cooking oil
1 cup chopped celery
1 bell pepper, chopped
1 onion, chopped
1/2 pound breakfast sausage
2 garlic cloves, finely diced
8 ounces cream cheese
1/3 cup freshly chopped parsley leaves
1 tablespoon hot sauce
1/4 cup bread crumbs
20 Anaheim or Poblano peppers, cut in 1/2, seeds removed

Directions

In a saute pan over medium-high heat add the oil. Once heated add the celery, bell peppers and onion and saute for about 8 minutes. Add sausage and garlic and brown. Add cream cheese and stir until melted. Take off heat and stir in parsley, hot sauce and bread crumbs. Let cool.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Stuff peppers with vegetable and cheese mixture and bake for 15 minutes or grill until char develops.

ZUCCHINI SQUARES

Zucchini squares, a quiche-like recipe made with eggs and zucchini.

Ingredients:

3 cups thinly sliced zucchini, unpeeled

1 cup biscuit mix

1/2 cup finely chopped onion

1/4 teaspoon dried leaf oregano

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste

dash garlic powder

2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup vegetable oil

4 eggs, lightly beaten

Preparation:

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl; mix well. Pour mixture into a 13 x 9-inch baking dish. Bake at 350° for about 30 minutes, or until lightly browned. Cut into squares and serve as an appetizer or side dish.

TOMATO AND WATERMELON SALAD
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yield: Serves 4 to 6

INGREDIENTS

3 or 4 small to medium heirloom tomatoes, in assorted colors, cored and cut into 3/4-inch chunks
1 small English or regular cucumber, peeled, seeded, and cut into 3/4-inch cubes
1 cup 3/4-inch-cubed yellow or red seedless watermelon flesh
1 Hass avocado, halved, pitted, peeled, and cut into 3/4-inch cubes
1 tablespoon chopped mixed fresh herbs, in any combination: basil, tarragon, chives, and cilantro
1/4 teaspoon coriander seed
3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
3 tablespoons aged balsamic vinegar
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

PREPARATION

In a bowl, combine the tomatoes, cucumber, watermelon, avocado, and herbs. In a spice grinder, grind the coriander seeds to a fine powder. Add the ground coriander to the tomato mixture and toss gently.

In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and salt and pepper to taste. Pour over the tomato mixture and toss to coat evenly. Taste and adjust the seasoning before serving.

EDAMAME SUCCOTASH
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

INGREDIENTS

Yield: 4 servings (serving size: 1 1/4 cups)

1 slice center-cut bacon

1 tablespoon butter

2 cups chopped sweet onion

2 cups fresh corn kernels (about 3 ears)

1 (16-ounce) bag frozen, shelled edamame, thawed

2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/2 teaspoon sugar

3 plum tomatoes, coarsely chopped

1 red bell pepper, seeded and coarsely chopped

3 tablespoons torn basil

1. Cook bacon in a nonstick skillet over medium heat until crisp. Remove bacon from pan, reserving 2 teaspoons drippings in pan; coarsely chop bacon.

2. Increase the heat to medium-high. Melt butter in drippings in pan. Add onion; sauté 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add corn kernels; sauté for 3 minutes or until lightly charred. Add edamame, and sauté for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in vinegar and next 5 ingredients (through bell pepper); cook 30 seconds, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle with bacon and basil.

TOMATO PIE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INGREDIENTS

1 9-inch pie shell
1/2 yellow or red onion, chopped
3-4 tomatoes, cut in half horizontally, squeezed to remove excess juice, roughly chopped, to yield approximately 3 cups chopped tomatoes
1/4 cup sliced basil (about 8 leaves)*
2 cups grated cheese (combination of sharp cheddar and Monterey Jack, or mozzarella)
3/4 cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon (or more to taste) of hot sauce

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

*To slice basil, chiffonade them by stacking the leaves on top of each other, roll them up like a cigar, starting at one end slice the "cigar" crosswise in thin slices.

METHOD

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Place pie shell in oven and cook for 8-10 minutes or longer until lightly golden. If you are starting with a frozen crust, you'll need to cook it a little longer. If you are using a homemade crust, freeze the crust first, then line the crust with aluminum foil and pre-bake it for 20 minutes, then remove the foil and bake an additional 10 minutes.

2. Squeeze as much moisture as you can out of the chopped tomatoes, using either paper towels, a clean dish towel, or a potato ricer.

3. Sprinkle the bottom of the pre-cooked pie shell with chopped onion. Spread the chopped tomatoes over the onions. Sprinkle the sliced basil over the tomatoes.

4. In a medium bowl, mix together the grated cheese, mayonnaise, hot sauce, a sprinkling of salt and freshly ground black pepper. The mixture should be the consistency of a gooey snow ball. Spread the cheese mixture over the tomatoes.

5. Place in oven and bake until browned and bubbly, anywhere from 25 to 45 minutes.

Serves 6.

MARGARITA GRILLED CORN
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yield: 8 servings
Time: 25 min. prep, 25 min. grill

Ingredients

8 ears fresh corn in husks
4 tsp. finely shredded lime peel (peel from 2 to 3 limes)
2 tsp. kosher salt or sea salt
1/3 cup butter, melted
1 tsp. chili powder
Small Limes (optional)

Directions

1. Carefully peel back corn husks, but do not remove. Scrub ears with stiff brush to remove silks. Rinse ears. Pull husks back up around corn. Place in large pot; cover with water. Soak 2 to 4 hours; drain well. Peel back husks and pat corn dry with paper towels.

2. For lime salt, in small bowl stir together lime peel and salt. Brush some of the butter on corn. Sprinkle lightly with lime salt and chili powder. Fold husks back around ears. Tie husk tops with strips of corn husk or 100% cotton kitchen string.

3. For charcoal grill, grill corn on rack of uncovered grill directly over medium coals for 25 to 30 minutes or until tender, turning and rearranging occasionally. (For gas grill, preheat grill. Reduce heat to medium. Place corn on grill rack over heat. Cover; grill as above.)

4. To serve, remove ties from corn; peel back husks. Pass remaining butter, lime salt, chili powder, and limes for squeezing.

Miss Mississippi Pageant

The Miss Mississippi Pageant brings thousands of fans to the city of Vicksburg to cheer on their favorite contestant to win the Miss Mississippi crown. 45 contestants will compete to represent the state at the Miss America Pageant in January.

David Blackledge, Miss Mississippi Pageant director said that the Vicksburg Convention Center will have about 2100 people on Saturday night of the pageant, 2000 on Friday night and between 1800-1900 on Wednesday and Thursday.

“Pageant week is a tremendous economic boom for the city,” Blackledge said. “People come in for 8 days from around the state to stay in our hotels, use our florists, and to shop around town especially downtown and at the Outlets.”

“We have some exciting things planned for the girls that have never been done before,” said Ford. “The hotel is completely decorated for the pageant. We have each contestant’s picture on a star on her door. Once the pageant starts, each day the winners will have their stars on display in the front of the hotel.”

Ford said that the host hotel has assisted with the parents and directors including putting together tour itineraries for things to do in Vicksburg and a list of Top Ten restaurants to dine at.

“Special requests were broadcasted on facebook and we received 30 phone calls from parents and families on wanting suggestions on what to do in Vicksburg,” said Ford. “We really take advantage of what all our city has to offer to get the parents and friends out and about in the community. One family has 25 people from around the United States and we have planned their whole itinerary on things to do in Vicksburg.

“Two of our hotel properties are sold out for that week and they typically don’t sell out during this week especially with all the new hotels in our area,” said Ford. MY Hospitality Services properties in Vicksburg include the Wingate by Wyndham, Motel 6, Fairfield Inn, La Quinta, and Days Inn. “The pageant is going to be bigger than every this year.”

This year’s Miss Mississippi Pageant is held at the Vicksburg Convention Center at 8 p.m. on Saturday July 10. Preliminary pageants will be Wednesday through Friday July 7-9 also at 8 p.m. Pageant activities begin on July 3 at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center Auditorium with the Prince and Princess Crowning Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

The Miss Mississippi Pageant Parade and autograph parties also contribute to Vicksburg’s “economic boom” during pageant week. The parade will be downtown along Washington Street on Monday July 5 at 7 p.m. An autograph party at participating downtown stores will follow and stores will stay open until 9 p.m.

Miss Mississippi 2009 Anna Tadlock will make her last public performance outside the pageant at Vicksburg’s Fourth of July “Sparks on the River.” She will kick off Independence Day festivities at the Vicksburg Waterfront with the National Anthem at 7 p.m.. Music entertainment by Super T and fireworks on the Mississippi River will follow.

Tim Smith, author of "Mississippi in the Civil War: The Home Front" will be signing his book on Friday July 2 at 4 p.m. at Lorelei Books and Saturday July 3 at 9 a.m. at the Visitor Center of the Vicksburg National Military Park.
Mississippi in the Civil War is the newest addition to the Heritage of Mississippi series, examines the state’s civilian populace during the Civil War. It examines Mississippi's Civil War defeat by both outside and inside forces. The invading Union army dismantled the state's political system, infrastructure, economy, and fighting capability. The state saw extensive military operations, destruction, and bloodshed within her borders. One of the most frightful and extended sieges of the war ended in a crucial Confederate defeat at Vicksburg, the capstone to a tremendous Union campaign.

As Confederate forces and Mississippi became overwhelmed militarily, the populace's morale began to crumble. Realizing that the enemy could roll unchecked over the state, civilians, Smith argues, began to lose the will to continue the struggle. Many white Confederates chose to return to the Union rather than see continued destruction in the name of a victory that seemed ever more improbable. When the tide turned, Unionists and African Americans boldly stepped up their endeavors. The result, Smith finds, was a state vanquished and destined to endure suffering far into its future.

The book presents the first examination of the state's Civil War home front in seventy years. It tells the story of all classes of Mississippians during the war, concentrating on previously neglected groups such as women and African Americans. The result is a new and fresh examination of the social side of war.

Timothy B. Smith, Adamsville, Tennessee, teaches history at the University of Tennessee at Martin. He is the author of several books, including Shiloh: The Battle and Battlefield and Champion Hill: Decisive Battle for Vicksburg.

River City Heart Walk Saturday at Rainbow

The River City Heart Walk is back for the 12th year, but in a new place this time.

The walk, which will include children’s activities and other entertainment, will be Saturday at the Rainbow Event Center at 1380 Warrenton Road. Last year’s walk was at Riverfront Park.

“We’re always excited to host this event in our city,” said Diane Gawronski, chairman of the 2010 River City Heart Walk. “Mississippi has a high propensity to heart disease. The walk helps bring awareness to heart disease. Many who walk do so in honor of those they lost to heart disease.”

Events will kick off with registration at 8:30 a.m., and the walk begins at 9. Participants will walk on a designated sidewalk, which wraps around the event center and offers views of the Mississippi River. Activities will be featured inside the event center.

“There will be all types of activities for children,” said Gay Smith, special events coordinator for the American Heart & Stroke Association, which is sponsoring the walk in Vicksburg and others across the country. “We’ll have the normal health screenings like blood pressure, sugar and everything that has to do with heart disease.”

A DJ will provide entertainment.

“We’re going to have a fun-filled morning,” Smith said.

The goal is to raise $75,000.

“We’re at least halfway there,” Gawronski said. “But registration is still open.”

Funds will benefit AHA research and prevention programs.

“Every 37 seconds, someone dies from heart disease,” Smith said. “That equals out to 2,400 people a day.”

Youth Waterfowl Hunt Scheduled

Hunters ages 15 and younger are eligible to take advantage of this year's annual MS youth waterfowl hunting weekend on February 6-7. To participate, youth must be accompanied by a licensed adult, who will be prohibited from harvesting any birds during the hunt.

"Now, more than ever, recruiting new hunters is vital to continue managing and enjoying our natural resources," said Ed Penny, MDWFP Migratory Game Bird Program Coordinator.

The MS Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks encourages participants in the youth hunt to utilize state Wildlife Management Areas with waterfowl hunting opportunities, which will be open for the weekend.

The WMA nearest Vicksburg is Mahannah, which is located in Warren and Issaquena Counmties near Redwood. Others in the area include Twin Oaks and Sunflower in Sharkey County and Lake George in Yazoo County. Hunters younger than 16 are not required to purchase hunting licenses, duck stamps or user permits for the WMAs when hunting during the weekend. However, other waterfowl regulations, including bag limits, will be the same for the youth hunting weekend as they are during the regular waterfowl season. Toxic shot and shotguns holding more than three shells are not allowed.

VICKSBURG, MS – October 20th, 2009 - Riverwalk Casino Hotel attempts to collect enough bras to cross over the Mississippi River into Louisiana and back with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society.

YOU’RE GOING TO DO WHAT? In an effort to best last year’s “Bras for Breast Cancer” fundraiser benefiting the American Cancer Society, Riverwalk Casino Hotel will attempt to make this year’s event bigger and better. For year number two, the goal is to double last year’s efforts by attempting to collect approximately 6000 bras. That’s enough to cross the Mississippi River over to the Louisiana state line and back. For each bra collected, Riverwalk Casino Hotel will donate $1 to the American Cancer Society.

WAY BACK WHEN…. In a first last year, Riverwalk Casino Hotel along with radio stations Miss 103 and Q105.1 asked the public to donate old bras and drop them by collection points across mid Mississippi. The public responded enthusiastically by donating over 3000 bras which resulted in Riverwalk Casino Hotel donating over $3200 dollars to the American Cancer Society. To top off the tremendous success of the event, a ceremony was held in which the bras were strung together and displayed across the old Highway 80 Mississippi River Bridge.

SAYS WHO? “We’re ecstatic to play a role in this event once again and do our part to heighten awareness about breast cancer” said Ginny Tzotzolas, Marketing Director for Riverwalk. ACS Director of Communications and Marketing Kelly Lindsay added “we’re so proud to be a part of this - events of this nature really increase awareness and that helps with early detection which can lead to better outcomes”.

FACTS OF THE MATTER… Of the approximate 200,000 new breast cancer cases predicted for this year, 1820 of those will be diagnosed in Mississippi. The 5 year relative survival for localized breast cancer has increased to 98% today from 80% in the 1950’s. Well known survivors of the disease include ChristinaApplegate, Sheryl Crow and Olivia Newton John.

DROP IT ALREADY WILL YA? Area communities are asked to support this event by dropping off old bras at the following Vicksburg locations: Riverwalk Casino and Shape Up Sisters. Jackson-area locations include: Any Curves for Women, Mia Bella, HD Entertainment & Gaming, Mud Predators Artic Cat andRepeat Street. Donations are being accepted through October 30th. The “Bras for Breast Cancer” stringing and dedication ceremony will be held Thursday, November 5th.

Join us for Outdoorama on the Rez scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2009 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Turcotte Lab of Highway 43 at the Ross Barnett Reservoir.

In celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day, the purpose of this event is to get kids and anyone interested in the outdoors to step outside for a hands-on experience with the tools and concepts of hunting and fishing in Mississippi. They will learn how to load muzzleloaders, reload shells, shoot skeet and sporting clays, get to try their hand at the MDWFP laser 3/D target shoot, learn how to tie flies, watch rOutdoorama 2004etriever and bird dog demonstrations, learn the art of falconry, fish for catfish, learn how knives are made, learn how to use a turkey call, shoot bows and arrows, try their hand at canoeing, learn how to use a treestand safely, see snakes and alligators, and learn about taxidermy.

It is a fun-filled day for all presented with the help of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, MomsLikeMe.com and a host of other conservation organizations and groups including Magnolia Fly Fishers, Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, Jackson Zoological Park, MS Dept. of Environmental Quality Office of Geology, American Zookeepers Association, Paul Meek, Ken Austin, Southern Heritage Labs, National Wild Turkey Federation, Mississippi Bowhunters Association, Wildlife Outreach Foundation, Treestand Manufacturers Association, Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation, Simmons Creative Productions, and more! Portion of Ridgeland Multi-Use Trail Will Be Closed

The City of Ridgeland will be widening and resurfacing its Multi-Use Trail between the Natchez Trace Parkway ramp at Old Canton Road and the Ridgeland Information Center, formerly the old craft center. A short section that connects the main artery of the trail to Rice Road at Pear Orchard will also be closed. This portion of the trail will be widened to 10 feet and resurfaced. Construction will begin on Monday, September 14 and continue through Friday, September 25. The contractor will make every effort to complete the project sooner.

Ridgeland officials apologize for the inconvenience to users of the trail. This construction project will enhance this most popular section of the trail.

Saturday is shaping up as a busy morning on Warren County's lakes.

Beginning at 4:a.m., as many as 100 fishermen are expected to descend on Lake Chotard for the 13th annual Area 10 Special Olympics Large Bass Tournament.

A couple hours later and a few miles out, at Eagle Lake, several dozen swimmers will hit the water for the first MS Open Water Swim Championship.

The bass tournament will also feature an arts and crafts area and a small bass tournament for children, as fish fry and a raffle for a bass boat. The entry fee is $100 per two-man boat, plus a $5 launch fee, and all proceeds benefit the Special Olympics. Check-in begins at 4 a.m. at Chotard Landing, and fishing at 6. There are hourly prizes for the biggest fish, as well as an overall $1,000 prize for the largest bass of the day.

The Open Water Swim is an event put on by the Vicksburg Swim Association, and its proceeds will benefit that group. The registration fee is $40, plus a required $10 registration fee with USA Swimming Swimmers will start from Messina Landing and make their way around a one-mile course filled with buoys, lifeguards, kayaks and scores of safety personnel.

In the lake full of various critters - alligators, snakes, turtles and fish, to name a few - plenty of safety precautions are being taken, said Sheri Wallace, meet director for swim. Wallace is hoping the inaugural event draws between 25 and 50 swimmers.

"That would be an excellent turnout," Wallace said, "We would like it to be between 25 and 50 to keep the numbers small so we can keep track of them.

The fifth annual Guns of Vicksburg Old Court House Benefit Shoot will be August 15 at Tara Wildlife. Cost is $100 per shooter or $600 per six-person team. Lunch is provided. The shoot is a National Sporting Clay Association sanctioned event, but nonmembers may participate. Registration on the day of the shoot begins at 7:30 a.m. To reach Tara Wildlife from Vicksburg, take U.S. 61 North to Eagle Lake Road(Mississippi 465), turn left and follow signs.

The Guns of Vicksburg sporting clay shoot to benefit the Old Court House Museum returns for the fifth year today at a new location, plus additional competitions and awards.

“Every year it just keeps growing and getting better, and it’s mostly locals participating,” said Steven Tzotzolas, an organizer of the shoot and a National Sporting Clay Association member who competes around the country. “As far as total number of participants, it’s definitely one of the largest shows in the state.”

The shoot can accommodate up to 220 participants, and Tzotzolas said Wednesday about 165 shooters had registered. While it is an NSCA-sanctioned event, nonmembers make up the majority of participants, said Tzotzolas.

“We’ll probably have 50 to 60 NSCA members, but over 70 percent of our shooters are just your recreational hunters who basically want to get a little practice in and have some fun,” he said.

After being held at the Loosa Yokena Plantation south of the city for the past four years, the shoot is moving to Tara Wildlife, an 18,000-acre private wildlife preserve at Eagle Lake, about 30 minutes north of Vicksburg.

Mike Winkler, who annually helps set and maintain the skeet machines, was the first to suggest Tara Wildlife when organizers began looking for a new location to accommodate more participants and find a place where out-of-town shooters could stay overnight.

“It was the first place that came to mind — they have the land and the lodging — and, when I called (Tara president) Gilbert Rose, he said he thought it would be a good fit,” Winkler said. “We’ve had a great location in the past, but this one is going to provide us the most accommodations and allow us to have the shoot without taxing the land. We’re going to do the whole shoot on a grass runway at Tara that’s 3,000 feet long and 135 feet wide.”

In all, 80 trophies will be awarded, about 20 more than last year. Along with an overall winner, trophies will be given to shooters with the highest marks in six categories: ladies, 16 and under, 17 to 21, 55 to 64, 65 to 74 and 75 and older. Door prizes will be given out after each of the three shooting rotations, said Tzotzolas, unlike years past when only one drawing was done at the end of all the rotations.

“The course will be a little bit more challenging than it has been in the past few years,” added Tzotzolas.Last year, the Old Court House Museum was able to restore four aging cisterns on its property with about $70,000 in proceeds from the past two or three shoots. The cisterns don’t store water anymore, but serve as restrooms and storage space. Bubba Bolm, museum curator and director, said this year’s proceeds likely will go toward replacing several missing or damaged windows at the 149-year-old landmark.

“We’ve got windows upstairs in the courtroom and along the perimeter of the building that really need replacing. The putty is loose, and they’re rattling around just waiting to fall out,” said Bolm. “We had a huge lightning strike here during a recent storm that knocked out our computer, a few air conditioning units and some lights — there’s always something to fix or maintain here.”

Tzotzolas said the credit for the success and expansion of the shoot through the years is due to the roughly 60 local volunteers who work year-round to organize, set up, operate and clean up after the event.

“It’s amazing to see how many people in the community come together each year to make this happen,” he said. “None of this could be possible without all the help of those at the Old Court House Museum; Shirley Griffin and all the volunteers she helps coordinate; Mr. and Mrs. Hyland, who let us use their land in the years past; Gilbert Rose and a whole lot of other people who deserve more credit than they get.”

Those who would like to participate in the shoot can pre-register by calling 601-279-4261. Cost is $100 for individuals or $600 for a six-person team. Lunch is provided for shooters, while those not participating can purchase a lunch for $10. Registration will begin at 7:30 on the morning of the shoot for those who do not pre-register.

Along with the 12-stage 100 bird main event shoot, a five-stand, 50-bird event will be held for an additional $40. Those who want to practice shoot in the five-stand event, but not compete for the trophy, may do so for $20, said Tzotzolas.“

The 52nd annual Miss Mississippi Pageant kicks off as 47 contestants arrive in Vicksburg, ready to battle it out in a week-long competition (July 15-18) for the 2009 state crown and a chance for the national title, set for January 20th in Las Vegas.

Preliminary competition will begin Wednesday at the Vicksburg Convention Center and run through Friday, with the finale Saturday night. The contestants, ages 18 to 24, will compete in three separate preliminary groups.

The top ten will be announced Saturday night. Those young women will compete in talent, swim wear, evening wear and on-stage question.

Hosting this year's pageant, themed Star, will be Miss Mississippi 2006 Taryn Foshee and Michael Young.

Entertainment will be by Chris Butler, who's performed with top country acts; Kiefer Slaton, a 2009 Vicksburg High graduate who will enter Mississippi State in the fall; Ben Bagby, who has performed on Broadway and in movies; and Ted Laney, a former pageant dancer. Eight Miss Mississippi dancers will perform during the competition, as well.

During the week, the contestants will make public appearances, including autograph parties and the annual Miss Mississippi Parade along Washington Street kicking off tonight at 7:00 pm.

The 2009 pageant will feature 15 returning contestants.

It will also have 22 blondes, 24 brunettes and one redhead. Eighteen have brown eyes, 15 blue, seven green and seven hazel. Twenty-six will sing, 13 will dance, seven will play the piano and one will play the flute.

The pageant will be televised on WLBT, Jackson; WGBC, Meridian; WLOV, Tupelo; WDAM, Hattiesburg/Laurel; WABG, Greenville; WXXV, South Mississippi and Time Warner Cable. Historic Photos of Mississippi

In Review: Mississippi's history is as thick and rich as the summer heat. Just like a Mississippi summer, I found that the best way to enjoy this wonderful coffee table style book from Turner Publishing was on the front porch with a big tall glass of iced tea.

As a little girl growing up in Vicksburg, I heard the stories of the Civil War, the siege and how the families had to live. Seeing the photo on page 8 brought to life all I heard about the caves dug into the sides of the hills and how families hid from Union troops.

Seeing photos of a covered bridge over the river here in Jackson where prisoners were held piqued my curiosity as to if that is now where the stack exists.

We took our boys to the recently refurbished Meridian Opera house for a play. What a joy to be able to show the original photos from when the Opera house was built and its incredible interior.

My in-laws will be interested in seeing the original photo of Boler Inn in Union. That is my husband's hometown and where General Sherman decided to "stay" when he slashed through central Mississippi.

This book has been divided into time segments:

Civil War and Survival (1860-1899)
The Joy of the Golden Age (1900-1919)
Depression Years and Singing the Blues (1920-1939)
War in Europe and Struggles at Home (1940-1970s)

Not only is this book a historic book about our state, it is a collector's item for anyone who is a Mississippian. It would be an amazing gift for the upcoming Father's Day, a history buff, or as a keepsake for family who may have moved away. As for me, I will be keeping my copy.

Rollin' on the River Siege Concert

As part of a continuing effort to help a local teen with lymphoblastic leukemia, and up-and-coming artist will perform a benefit concert at 6:00 p.m., June 20 at the Vicksburg City Auditorium.

Sean McConnell, a Boston native who has written songs recorded by Tim McGraw and Brad Paisley, has agreed to play for free.

If all started with a handful of people who wanted to help 18-year old Kyle Coleson, his mother, Lisa, and 14-year-old brother, Cody, who has a mild form of cerebral palsy. Since early March, that group has grown to 500 plus people.

"We just wanted to try to do anything we could to help Kyle out, and we knew the community would be happy to do it," said Coleson's cousin Dan Muirhead. Muirhead's mother, Shanna, - Coleson's aunt - has a relative who works for Warner/Chappell Music in Nashville and connected the planners to musician McConnell.

The "Siege of Leukemia" shirt plays off Vicksburg's Civil War history and shows two "USS Cure" gunboats firing at a red blood cell, a reference to the cancer.

County Junction and Goldie's Express will provide food, and Brown Bottling Group will supply drinks. Local businesses have donated gift certificates and other items to be raffled for $1 at the concert.

I wanted to share with you a new nature guide booklet that was just introduced this past week by the Vicksburg Convention and Visitor's Bureau. The new VCVB guide is aiming to draw nature enthusiast and also restructuring of the VCVB web site. Some twenty-five nature sites are offering a host of outdoor activities within a 30-mile drive of Vicksburg and is highlighted in the new 25-page guide. The glossy, full color guide was unveiled by VCVB Executive Director Bill Seratt at their monthly meeting last Thursday. The VCVB partnered with the Audubon Society Lower Mississippi River Program in Vicksburg and the Lower Delta Partnership to create the guide - one of several the VCVB has created to tap into what Seratt call "niche markets."

Creating and printing 50,000 of the nature guides cost $26,500, said Seratt, with the VCVB picking up the bulk of the cost. The Audubon Society contributed $5,000, and the Lower Delta Partnership another $2,500, he said. It features maps, directions and descriptions of state parks, lakes, historic sites, wildlife management areas and national forests near Vicksburg in Mississippi and Louisiana offering bicycling trails, boat launches, camping, fishing, canoeing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, picnicking and wildlife viewing. Information about scenic drives, Mississippi River tours and regional outdoors festivals are also included, as well as Web site links and phone numbers. You can pick up a guide at our local visitors centers or just called the Vicksburg Chamber of Commerce and they will mail you one. Have a happy summer!

National Boating and Fishing Week

Free fishing days set for Mississippi parks -

The only thing better than spending a relaxing day fishing is getting to fish for free.

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks is observing National Boating and Fishing Week by offering two weekends of free fishing at state lakes and state parks lakes.

June 6-7 and June 13-14 are designated as free fishing days and no launch fees or permits are required on these days. A valid Mississippi fishing license is required.

"This is just another way we can encourage people to get out and fish," MDWFP Fishing Bureau Director Ron Garavelli said. "This is a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time fishing and we hope people take advantage of it."

Vicksburg Riverfront Murals

The final riverfront mural will be unveiled in front of the floodwall here in downtown Vicksburg completing an eight year project. It will also complete the 32 murals on the floodwall and will honor a grocer, Jitney-Jungle.

"I am so excited, you cannot imagine," said Nellie Caldwell, head of the Riverfront Mural Committee. "To see the whole wall finished and is a marvelous feeling."

Sponsored by the Nosser family and friends, the mural depicts Jitney-Jungle, a first-of-its-kind supermarket to open in Vicksburg in 1933, and the owners who opened it, the late Pete Sr. and Bessie Nosser of Vicksburg.

"The Jitney-Jungle was a lot of things all under one roof," said Rowdy Nosser, a grandson of Pete Sr. and Bessie Nosser. "It was a central part of life in the city. It was a place where people were truly appreciated in that time."

The store housed a cafeteria, which Rowdy Nosser referred to as a "gathering place," a toy store and a delicatessen.

The Nosser family owned and operated four Jitney-Jungle grocery stores in Vicksburg for over 50 years.

The guest speaker will be former Vicksburg Mayor Johnny Holland, and Miss South Outstanding Teen Grace Claire Cordes will sing the "Star-Spangled Banner."

Immediately after the unveiling, a reception will follow at the Art Park beneath a covered tent.

The event will feature foods from local restaurants and door prizes, while celebrating the end of the 32-mural historic Riverfront Mural project.

"We really want all of our sponsors and everyone involved to be in attendance," said Caldwell.

"This is the final thing." Caldwell expects more than 400 people to attend.

Almost all murals in the series were paid for with donations. The project followed a visit to Paducah, KY., where Caldwell saw Dafford's work and suggested a similar project here. Mayor Laurence Leyens agreed and named her chairman of the committee. The Dafford murals cost from $15,000 to almost $20,000 each and the City of Vicksburg landscaped, fenced and lighted the area.

This is the last week of school (hallelujah), and we're getting ready for the summer. A few questions:

• Do you have school-aged children? Is one of your children starting kindergarten in the fall?

• What are your summer plans, as far as daycare? Are you happy where your child is in daycare this summer?

• What are you doing to get ready for the next school year? Do you know the principal at your child's school? Are you active in the PTA or other parent groups?

I'm asking these questions to share tips I've learned, and to encourage you to get involved in your child's education. It was scary for me to see my daughter walk through those doors on the first day of kindergarten, not knowing her teacher or the other kids in that classroom. I cried at the thought of her growing up, and the uncertainty of her first year in "big school."

Tip: get to know your child's teacher, especially at the kindergarten level. This is the person who is going to spend every day with your child, and will be doing her best to teach her whole class the basics of the kindergarten curriculum. Ask her about her classroom management techniques, and what you can do to reinforce at home her discipline system. If there's something you disagree with, talk to her about it; don't try to undermine at home what she's doing at school to keep order in the class. Keep in mind that some of the kids in her class have never been in a classroom setting, and are going to have a difficult time adjusting to the structure.

And one more tip: Read to your child. Read every day, and encourage him/her to read, too.

As for summer plans, it's tempting to be lazy, sit at home and play video games all summer. But try to do what you can to keep your child mentally and physically fit in the off season. There are tons of summer camps in the arts, athletics and, yes, academic. If you have to work and can't take your child to camps, look for a summer program that offers more than just baby-sitting. Look for a program that has field trips, maybe dance class or swim lessons. Keep your child learning and active. And check at your child's school for summer reading lists.

For next year, make time to get to know the principal at your child's school. Ask questions about the curriculum your child will be learning, and things you can do at home to prepare. Find out how the school ranks on the state's accountability scale. What's going on in the gifted classrooms, and what are the facilities like? Is the building clean and organized? What resources are available in the library?

And, of course, ask about the PTA or PTO. For working moms, it's hard to be at the school every day, and to go to officer meetings that are held during work hours. But most PTA meetings are at night, and there are always volunteer opportunities. It's not easy to be a presence at your child's school, but when parents are involved, children always, always do better in the classroom.

This school year, I was not able to be part of the PTO at daughter's school. But next year, she'll be in school where I work and I will be there. It's going to be nice to have lunch with her sometimes, and to work with the principals and teachers. I've already been recruited to the PTA board, and I'm looking forward to getting to know the other parents as well. Daughter has done OK so far, and I'm expecting her to only get better as time goes on.
